Description
Art and culture have always reflected everyday life. And the daily reality of violence and counterviolence that has gripped Afghanistan since the 1980s quickly found its way into one of the region’s oldest crafts: carpet making. Traditional floral and animal motifs and ornaments were gradually replaced or supplemented by symmetrical arrangements of hand grenades, tanks, helicopters, rocket launchers, and AK-47 assault rifles. Afghan war rugs became symbols of their time in no time at all. These hand-knotted wool carpets communicated both resistance and a sense of victory. They moved between utility and ornament, between classical function and narrative design, but also between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary collectible.
