Description
Rare Küchenbaum (Kitchen Tree) by Stefan Wewerka, early first edition produced by Tecta in Germany circa 1984.

A column made of chrome-plated steel conceals cables and water pipes, surrounded by everything one might need in a kitchen: an electric stove, sink, work surface, and dish rack, as well as hooks for hanging pots or dish towels. Even a spice rack is included. The arrangement of the functional elements can be adapted to individual needs.

This serially produced kitchen tree by designer Stefan Wewerka is all about movement. The design focuses less on the workspace itself than on the act of working — on the users’ dynamic interaction with their environment: a concentric circling around the objects of everyday use. The kitchen tree is both an experiment and a utilitarian object, occupying, like many of Wewerka’s creations, a space between architecture, art, and design.

Wewerka first gained recognition for his distorted chair sculptures, which demand a flexibility of thought. Though still recognizable as chairs, they cannot be used as such — their seats are so sharply inclined that sitting comfortably is impossible. In these sculptural chairs, Wewerka makes the relationship between applied and fine arts visible.
